The Chalvet gondola is a device located on the Chalvet snow front, facing the south of the Montgenèvre area.
At the beginning of the station, the gondola did not exist of course: in its place was installed a telemix with two-seater cabins and two-seater seats with perpendicular boarding. This device had an intermediate station at the Bergerie. The first section linked Montgenèvre to the Bergerie. The second part of the aircraft climbed to below the summit of Chalvet, at an altitude of 2577m.
In 1983, the first section was renovated and replaced by a six-seater gondola from the Italian manufacturer Agudio. This takes over the buildings which housed the telemix stations. The line is unchanged. The old intermediary has been converted into a garage for the cabins. In 1985, it was the turn of the second section to be replaced by a two-seater Montaz Mautino fixed chairlift.
The Chalvet gondola has opened up the sunny area of Chalvet. South facing, this part of the area offers both technical runs (Rocher Rouge and runs around the Chalvet chairlift and the Trois Fournéous ski lift) as well as simple (Alpet and Montquitaine). When the sector opened, a footbridge had to be built to allow skiers to pass safely over the national road. This was already damaging the use of the sector by its difficult and unpleasant access. But in 2008, the Serre Thibaud telemix came out of the ground. Its departure near the Tremplin chairlift and the construction of a footbridge to pass the blue "Pharo" slope have made this part of the ski area attractive again and allowed a better distribution of skiers over the entire area. ski resort from Montgenèvre.
Now that the Serre Thibaud telemix has been built, the Chalvet cable car has lost some of its skiers, who prefer the comfort of the telemix and the possibility of no longer taking off their shoes with the seats. But, the Chalvet offers two major advantages over Serre Thibaud:
- Be able to go up in altitude without going too low (poor quality snow)
- Allow the opening of the sector in the event of strong wind (telemix closed because the top of its line is exposed to strong winds).
In addition, during the 2011/2012, summer 2012, winter 2012/2013 and summer 2013 seasons, the aircraft underwent a real makeover: the pylons were repainted in khaki, the cabins were changed and the exterior appearance and interiors of the stations have been completely redone.
In summer and winter, the Chalvet gondola is open on certain days until 6 p.m. (and every day in summer) to serve a monorail toboggan run (the longest in France): the Monty Express. In summer, the ascent also provides access to some mountain bike trails.
The cable car serves two slopes in addition to the Chalvet chairlift:
- Pharo: The gondola only serves its part. The start is rather steep then after a fork to the left, the track goes towards the Serre Thibaud telemix
- Suffin: This track provides access to Montquitaine as well as a return to the Tremplin chairlift and to the telemix for beginners.
