Also known as the « Fort des Nuages », Fort du Chaberton rises to an altitude of 3,131 metres, making it one of the highest forts in Europe.

Built between 1900 and 1914, its summit had to be dynamited in order to be levelled, reducing its height by six metres. Its construction, a real technical and human feat, involved almost 300 civilian workers and engineers. The structure is made up of eight turrets, which represent the visible part of a mostly underground complex. Today, the site has become a hiking destination, where its remains can still be seen.

The idea of building a fort at the summit of Mont Chaberton, which overlooks the Montgenèvre pass between the Piedmont and Durance valleys, dates back to the early 19th century. The work, entrusted to the engineering department of the Turin army corps, began in 1892.
