Montgenèvre
Montgenèvre is located on a secondary route of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, which follows the Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road built in 118 BC, and now approved and signposted by the FFRP as GR 653D.
Section 1 of the Via Domitia (GR 653D) is 100 km long, it goes from Montgenèvre to Savines-le-Lac. It is a secondary route which goes towards Santiago de Compostela, it joins the Via Tolosana in Arles.
TO SEE ON THE ITINERARY
– In Montgenèvre,Saint-Maurice churchand its lantern (lantern) which was used by visitors who crossed the pass in bad weather,the Saint-Maurice des Alberts church.
– In Névache, for those who had taken the Col de l’Échelle, the church of Plampinet and the frescoes of Notre-Dame-des-Grâces,
– In Briançon, its fortifications, the Cité Vauban, the Notre-Dame Saint-Nicolas collegiate church, the Cordeliers church, the Pénitents chapel, the Récollets convent, and the Sainte-Catherine church.
– In Prelles, hamlet of Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières, the Saint-Jacques chapel and its frescoes of the life of Saint Jacques.
– In Bouchiers, hamlet of Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières, the chapel of Saint-Hippolyte
– At Argentière-la-Bessée, the silver mines, the Saint-Apollinaire church and the Saint-Jean chapel
– At La Roche-de-Rame, the Saint-Laurent church
– In Saint-Crépin, the “Sancto Crispino” church, and the Notre-Dame church, former church of the Pilgrims.
– In Eygliers, the Saint-Antoine church, the Saint-Guillaume church
– In Saint-Clément-sur-Durance, the Traverses chapel and its tower of Saint-Clément
– In Châteauroux-les-Alpes, Notre-Dame des Baumes and Notre-Dame de Sainte-Croix
– In Embrun, the Notre-Dame-du-Réal cathedral, the Brown Tower, former archbishops’ keep, the Cordeliers church.
– In Crots, Boscodon Abbey and Picomtal Castle
